At the heart of the Legends of St. Dwynwen series is the simple village church of St. Margaret’s. I saw a number of churches in English villages that were similar to the picture I had in my head of ‘my’ church, but when I saw this sturdy, plain, square-towered church in a Cotswold village, I knew I had found ‘St. Margaret’s.’

One of my favorite things to see in England are the village churches.  This rather squat, square-towered church is typical of a number of them.

Other churches, like this one in a small Devonshire village, are much grander than I would have expected to find in a village.

This charming little church where I'm standing is in the same small Devon village.

The interior of this 'wool' church was absolutely breathtaking.  I love that pulpit.  It is called a 'wool' church because it was built with the money from the wealthy parishioners who made their fortunes in sheep.  The church is richly decorated on the inside, yet the parish is quite small, and I am sure that the upkeep of a big old church like this is a real burden to these small parishes.

They were obviously holding some other local event here, as you can tell from the tables set up in the sanctuary.

This wonderful pipe organ was in that same wool church.

Here is a church floor where you can see the plaques over those important early people who were buried in the church.

The very first village we drove through had this lovely lych gate, so I had to stop and look at it.  I've read about them in English novels all my life.  The lych gate was where the coffin was set down before they carried it into the church at a funeral, and they have little roofs on them so that the coffin and pallbearers didn't get wet.

This lovely church is tucked away in the heart of Ludlow.

In Ludlow, you had to walk down this path between buildings in order to reach the church behind them.

Every church we went in had bell pulls to ring the church bells.  They keep them looped up like this when not in use.  Apparently they all have bell pull groups with several people in them and they get together and practice and ring the bells on Sunday, each person yanking on his rope in proper sequence.  They even have contests between various churches.
